About NEPA
The National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 (NEPA) is the basic national charter for protection of the environment. It requires all Federal agencies to implement procedures to make environmental consideration a necessary part of an agency's decision-making process. NEPA promotes sound decision-making through careful consideration of environmental consequences of proposed actions. NEPA mandates that Federal agencies consider environmental effects of their actions. A wide range of Federal actions require NEPA consideration, including changes to land management practices, environmental cleanup operations, pest management, master planning, and permitting.
Actions initiated by state and local governments, and by non-government organizations, are also subject to NEPA if they are partially of fully funded with Federal money (e.g., many state highway projects) or require Federal permits (e.g. land development requiring a Section 404 wetlands permit).
