Healthy Fish Habitat
What do salmon need for a good home?
- Clean, cool water. Salmon like cool water temperatures and water free of pollutants or heavy silt loads.
- Shelter. Salmon need pools to feed adn rest in. Overhanging vegetation and large woody debris offer protection from predators and a place to rest out of the current.
- Food. Salmon feed on aquatic insects and zoo-plankton (that also depend on clean water), and on insects that drop off stream bank vegetation.
Suffocating Sediment:
Fine sediment in streams litterally chokes fish to death
How does sediment go into streams?
- Bank erosion caused by lack of a vegetated buffer zone
- stream crossings where heavy motor vehicle, bicycle, and foot traffic can churn up sediment to erode into streams.
How can we restore fish habitat?
- Take the trail out of the stream.
- Stabilize the stream bank.
- Re-establish vegetaion
